Birthday Cake Competition Entries

Here's the fantastic birthday cakes that came in for my Cake Competition and Giveaway... 60 in total. It was too hard to decide the winner; I narrowed it down to four finalists with the help of Dash, Princess and Mr G (click here to see them) and then got my readers to vote.

In the end, the winner was Linda's Treasure Chest cake, by only one vote; Amanda's Dinosaur and Elizabeth's Pirate Ship tied for second.

All the cakes were amazing, all made with love. Check them out (you'll get some great ideas!)

....................................................
Kate, from Devonport, Auckland.
Mum of three including Bethan and Daniel...

Kate says: "Here's a picture of the only birthday cake I've made that actually looked like it was supposed to (I won't bother entering Bethan's "disco ball" that ended up looking more like R2D2!!)Goes without saying (I hope) that it's a pirate for Daniel's 3rd birthday."

Trish says: "We recently had a small birthday lunch for Daniel's 1st birthday which was ANZAC Day 25 April. We didn't have much time to prepare for it but this is the cake Sean made out of Foodtown sponges cut freehand and then iced by himself as well......he did a fantastic job eh!? I think he has really missed his proper vocation!""...{my sister} Jo's little girl Nachalah turned 2 on 29th April and we went down to Papamoa to attend the party Jo had organised for her at the local playcentre. Jo baked the Pooh Bear cake in a moulded cake tin to give it contours and Sean (the magnificent!) iced it. Nashi LOVES Winnie the Pooh and so the cake scored big with her!"

It was made by my Mom and older sister Sam with lots of love and creativity as I was not up for much leading up to the party. Pity about the monkey candle on the top… I think its awesome and I’m sure one of many to come from our families."

2: Sanita's 10th birthday: flower: made from 4 heart shaped cakes. Huge cake, heaps to give out at the end and a couple of petals for class the next day.

3: Michael's 3rd Birthday: Trains. Got some ideas off the net including a cool idea to bake some cake mix in a can for the caboose (front train). Older kids decorated the 2 wagons.
...................................................................................
Nicole from Taupo, New Zealand.
Mum of Aidan (6), Sofia (4) and Hugh (2)
This is a First Birthday baked cheesecake topped with mice (of course, what else would be on a CHEESEcake?) Each mouse is half a tinned pear, with currant eyes, almond sliver ears and a sultana nose. The tails are made of thin raspberry liquorice straps.

Sofia's 4th Birthday Butterfly Cake; baked in two roasting dishes and then the shapes were cut out; the butter cream icing looks so delicious! When Aidan turned 5, Nicole made him this Soccer Ball Cake. She used a round ceramic mixing bowl lined with baking paper and baked two cake halves, then sandwiched them together and pinned them with skewers. It was iced with butter-cream icing. The grass was made by dying shredded coconut green.

This cake was for their granny's birthday. She had recently bought a poodle so Nicole baked grandma a Poodle Cake for her birthday. The fur is white marshmallows. For Sofia's third birthday Nicole made this delicious Castle. The turrets are ice cream cones upside down and iced.

...................................................................................
Kiri, from Auckland, New Zealand.
Mum to son Marika and daughter Kalyah.

Kiri Says: "This Barbie cake was made for Kalyah’s 5th birthday, she loved dolls and it was as easy as baking a cake in a deep tin, shaving off the edges, covering with cream and plonking doll in the middle of it…. The other cake was made by Kalyah’s great nanna. Kalyah loves swimming so she made a ring cake, iced chocolate fingers around the outside, put chopped jelly in the middle and some small plastic dolls inside the pool...."

...................................................................................

Vanessa, from Brisbane, Australia.
Mum of two girls, Ella and Larissa.

Vanessa says: "Ella's cake (a pinata) was an idea from the Australian Womans Weekly. I had trouble doing the chocolate on the top. Jason's mum gave me a hand cause it set before we had a chance to do the entire mould! When Ella hit it with the plastic hammer the hammer broke and it was like flying shrapnel as the M&Ms hit the kids in the face. No matter how hard Ella tried to smash the choc it wouldn't budge. Fortunately Daddy gave it a whack and cracked it! Larissa's cake is not as flash as Ella's but it's a homemade idea. It’s a Dora Explorer going on an adventure Cake..."
