Family Movie Night: The Muppets

Every Saturday we will be sharing with you our ideas for family movie nights. Movie reviews and fun theme night ideas.

Our Super-Cool-Fab Review Team...

Our crack team of expert Movie Reviewers are this week reviewing The Muppets, the animated box office hit from 2011.

Who amongst us didn't love The Muppets when we were kids? The Muppets have made a comeback in the new Millenium with this 2011 movie loaded with irony, deliberate cheesiness, silly songs and flash mobs.
Of course there are the usual cameo appearances by celebrities (many of whom weren't even born when the Muppets were big first time round). Some of the songs are instant classics: "Am I a Man or a Muppet?" and "Me Party" - both written by Kiwi Bret Mackenzie (Flight of the Conchords) and earned him an Oscar. I have watched this movie around four times now, and it still makes me smile. I never get sick of Miss Piggy's fab hair, the Swedish chef and Animal. The world may have changed but I'm glad the Muppets have been revived for my kids' generation.

Movie Plot Summary: The Muppets studio is run down and abandoned and the Muppets have all gone their separate ways and are no longer famous. Now they have to raise Ten Million dollars to save their Theatre from an evil Oil Baron's dastardly plans. Thanks to new muppet "Walter" they get the old gang back together and hold a Telethon to try and raise the funds. OK so the plot is fairly obvious, but the cool thing is that all this is done with plenty of irony and camera-asides, to let us know that it doesn't take itself too seriously...
"You came back! How did you get here so fast???"
"Oh we traveled by map..."
It's a great pick for a family movie night and will appeal to all ages.

Here's what our experts have to say about The Muppets...

Dash. B. Cool: "Am I a Man or a Muppet...? I must be a muppet of a man! I think this is a cool movie. I like it. I could still watch it again and again."

Dash scores this movie's "coolness" as:

Foxy Fab: "I only liked the Jack Black part but the rest is quite dumb. I liked it when i first watched it but now (after watching it ten times) it's getting a bit lame. Oh and I liked Miss Piggy and when they kidnapped Jack Black. And I kind of like "Man or a Muppet..."

Foxy rates this movie's "fabness" as:

Super Scrag: "It was cool cos I liked the girl. I liked the singing part. I liked the part when he went into class and he said "oh sorry class" and "Me Party" and "Muppet of a Man". The girl was the funniest. Jack Black was funny too. My favourite muppet is the guy with the fart shoes (Fozzie Bear). "

SuperScrag scores this movie's "super-ness" as:

..............

OK, so the song is just so popular with my kids, I have to share it with you...

A simple way to take your family movie night to the next level is to declare a family sleepover...

A Family Sleepover (to Make Your Muppet Movie Night even more Super-Cool-Fab)

This requires very little effort and will have the kids running for their duvets sooner than you can say "Sleepover". Here's how to survive enjoy the night and still be able to walk the next day...
  • create a giant bed on the floor of your living room
  • make the effort to drag in the big mattress from your bedroom (trust me, your back will thank you later - full story here)
  • get the kids to help drag in their duvets, blankets pillows and cushions
  • create a cosy colourful nest for you all to watch the movie from
  • string up some Christmas lights to create a fun atmosphere
  • then pop some popcorn and snuggle down together cos...
it's time to play the music
Its time to light the lights
Its time to meet the muppets on the Muppet Show tonight!
