Lil Captain Underpants

I am nervously typing as my toddler sits on the couch... in his undies.
Brand new ultimate undies, that is.

Finally this lazy mama has decided that with a third birthday looming close, I'd better get up off my nappy-lovin behind and potty-train my boy.

I was kind-of given a push by my lovely and clever friend Meg C., who is the creator of ultimate undies. She has offered me some of her toilet-training undies to try, so I can share with you all about her clever invention. Cute cotton undies, with an absorbant liner. Kind of like pull-ups but better. And cuter. And more eco-friendly.

Meg also has a website she is putting together called The Toilet Stop {still under construction - lots more material to come}. The Toilet Stop  is full of ideas and tips for toilet training. Thanks Meg! I'm sure I'll be visiting your website a lot over the next few weeks!

...
Oooh! I am back! Guess where I've been?
My little Captain Underpants just shouted: "Mummy I need a weeweeeeeee!!"
So off we ran to the loo.

He sat on the throne and then closed the door on me.
"Mummy you not take a picture!" he said.

Oops sorry, darlin'. The blogger in me got a bit carried away.

And guess what? He finally did a wee!!
On our third try of the day  {first two tries completely without any wee-action} followed by one pair of wet Buzz Lightyear undies soaking in the bucket.

But now, one pair of too-cute ultimate undies giving me piece of mind while he watches a bit of Dora.

So I guess it has begun. The process of unbaby-fying my very last toddler.
I'll keep you posted on how we go, and how the Ultimate Undies work out.

Wish me luck!
xx

Ultimate Undies Website {with pricelist}

P.S. Just back from checking on Scrag's progress. Boo, he did a wee in his Ultimate Undies. This is gonna take some time. But YAY the Ultimate Undies  worked superb!  Nothing leaked through to the couch at all. Brilliant.

Loving...So Many Things!

♥ Roses. Given to me by my Valentine...

♥ ...sitting on my windowsill next to these Lemons. Loving Yellow...

♥ ...and Blue. Loving these beauties picked as I walked along. Loving walking along too...

♥ Loving the library. Where else can you request a popular book and have it in your hands the next day? {can't believe how fast that was} For FREE. Mrs Readalot is looking forward to reading... The Red Tent!

♥ Loving school swimming carnivals for six-year-olds. The balloons. The hats. The smiles. Chatting to lovely friends on the sideline while snapping away...

And then spotting this little face...

Loving that she wants me there so bad. Shucks. ♥

♥ Loving spending the morning with this lovely girl  and her completely edible children...

...who don't mind posing for the camera endlessly, even though this amateur simply cannot capture the fairies flying even after 27 takes...

♥ Loving two peas in a pod. Scrag and Rangi. Do they come any heart-twistingly cuter??

♥ Loving BOO! It never gets old. What's under the covers?? These two adorable rascals...

♥ ♥ ♥

♥ Loving these healthy-as dairy-free smoothies. Soooo good.
How do I make them, you ask??

OK first of all peel two bananas, wrap them in plastic and freeze them overnight {or better still keep a supply in there for whenever you feel like one of these divine shakes}

In your blender, break up the frozen bananas, add a couple of handfuls of frozen berries and then top with some light soy milk (or rice milk). Whizz whizz whizz. Slurp slurp slurp. Ahhhhhhhhh...

The frozen banana makes it so thick and creamy. No need for yoghurt. No need for icecream. Healthy and delicious. SO GOOD!!!
♥

While I'm at it I should mention that I am Loving that Food has lost its hold on me. Or so it would seem. The Daniel Fast has been amazing, there has been a real "shift" in my thinking, not just my eating. It's funny cos I didn't really expect that. I set out to do just the ten days, and now even though I have "finished" I find myself preferring a soy chai latte, a fruit smoothie, a bowl of roast veges. I have nibbled on some ham and put milk in my tea, but I am just so happy eating this way. I feel no urge to rush back to my old ways. Long may it continue.

♥ Loving Little Bloggers...

My kids have blogs, what can I say.
Dash spent last night photographing his toys. And himself. For his latest post which he wrote this morning.
And made me upload photos for, in the midst of lunch-making and shower-taking.
Then as soon as he clicked "POST" he scrolled right to the "followers" box to see if he had any new followers. Because he had a new post, so he should have some new followers, right?

LOL. If only it were that simple. So if you feel in a generous mood, would you pop over to his blog and follow him. It would make his day, honest.
And while you're at it, wanna visit Miss Fab and Follow her too? Thanks! You're a Star!

Miss Fab's Blog: The AbFab Blab

And finally...

Loving Stan Walker.
This guy is the real deal. He came to our church on Sunday night and shared his story. Wow.
If you don't know who Stan is, he won Australian Idol last year, and his lifestory is incredible. Love this guy's humility, his honesty, his beautiful spirit, and the way he just loves God and it shows. Plus he is way talented and has cool-as songs.
Now I just have to get the album.

♥ I could go on. I could tell you how I am loving the cooler weather and the way my hair doesn't look like an aff without the 100% humidity. I could go on about how I am now used to my haircut and actually like it. Maybe even love it. I could tell of the sound of cicadas chirping, the sun shining, the way I feel so good when I do my art.

button2Right now there is so much to be thankful for. Can I whisper to you that I think I've turned a corner?

Hope is blooming inside me and it feels gooooooooooood.

Promises

This is a picture I created last week out of the depths of my soul. I've been going to an Art Therapy group *bliss* and at the first session this was the image I arrived at.

Me locked in a dark abandoned room full of the dust of broken dreams. On the wall, a mirror, cracked.

On the shelf, a jar. A beautiful jar full of....something. Something precious. Something that held the key to my escape.

I'm curious, said the instructor. What is in the jar?
Try painting it out this week and see what comes.
So I painted the jar.

Still not sure what is inside. But I somehow know that what is within doesn't come from me. Is not dependant on me. And it holds the answers I need.

Praying for my Troubled Son one night, I found myself saying, "You promised me God..."
And suddenly it clicked. The jar contains my promises.
The words that have been revealed to my heart from Heaven.

I took my little painting along to the next session and waited to see what would unfold.

The exercise: Choose from a list of hebrew names for God. Pick one that "jumps out" at you and represent it on the page.

My eye was drawn immediately to Jehovah Shalom.
God, my Peace.

I drew the word in muted shades of pastel. A cloud, a mist of peace that I longed to envelope me.

The next step, draw myself. Where I am right now.

Tied up in knots, I was. Anxiety for my Troubled Son. Worry. Fear.

Now I was instructed to lay the two pictures side by side and ask myself the question: What would a God of Peace want to give to me, say to me, do for me today?

Peace would undo the knots.
Suddenly I had a sense of the rope being untied and stretched out to form a hammock.
I saw myself sleeping, resting in that hammock.
And as I started to draw it out, I found that I knew what I was resting on.
Promises.

In particular this promise. Given to me twenty years ago, long long before I ever had children, or even a husband. A promise that God would show himself to my children and make himself real to them.
This promise I can claim for my Boy.

And have Peace, knowing that God keeps his promises.

Chocolate Afghan & Oat Cookies (Gluten-Free)

Gluten free chocolate "afghan" cookies recipe

I love my Bakels gluten free baking mix. But there are some things it is not great for... like cookies.
The first time I tried to bake GF cookies they spread across the baking tray like a flood.

But did I give up??
Did I say, oh well, no cookies for us? Did I surrender to store-bought blandness? or complicated concoctions with guar gum and potato/rice/xanthum goo??
Ahh come on, you know me! The Lazy Cook! As if!
I just had to find a few regular recipes that would work for my Bakels one-stop-baking mix.

So I experimented. And figured out that the trick is to have another ingredient to bind the mixture.
So I tried Oat cookies... delicious! Perfect! The oats are the perfect foil for the spready bakels.
And... Chocolate afghans. Again, it's the cornflakes that stick it all together.
So, welcome to gluten-free cookie heaven.
Where we bake easy yummy cookies and they don't run all over the tray...

A Note about Oats: My Coeliac friend Leonie told me: Oats don't have gluten but because they get cross contaminated in growing and processing it means that Coeliacs can't have them unless they find some that are certified "not contaminated".
However for us non-coeliacs who are just gluten intolerant, regular old rolled oats are fine.

Loving... Here and Now

Back in the days when I was being woken every night by multiple little sleepers, when my body was a milk-cow and toddler tantrums were destroying my peace, I would look enviously at the mothers of school-agers and think, lucky them. Their troubles are over.
I imagined that life with "big kids" would be... easy. Enjoyable. Simpler.

Now I shake my head over my naive new-mother-self. Poor deluded then-Simoney. How wrong you were.
Yes life is easier when you having full nights of unbroken sleep most of the time. Yes endless breastfeeding and nappy changing and baby-crying is incredibly draining and bloody hard work.
But. Life with school-aged kids is no picnic in the sun either.
There are battles. All kinds of them. Battles that test your courage, require wisdom and call into question your parenting tactics.

That is where I am here and now.
In the middle of a battle with a beloved school-ager.
So today, I am looking for things to love about the here and now.
Because I know that even in the midst of struggle, there are still things to love and be thankful for...
So here goes.

Loving Lunchboxes
I have to pat myself on the back for the little things I am getting right. And my lunchboxes, I have to say, are a work of healthy art. Just look at what's in there today for Miss Fab.
A ham-salad sandwich on home-baked gluten free bread. Fresh pineapple. Cherry tomatoes & cucumber. Chopped up apple and apricot. Yoghurt. A Corn thin with nutella. Dash has his own version. Scrag even has one. Full of fruit and healthy snacks.

Today I feel like a good mama because I am feeding my kids good things.

Loving Eating Good Things
Loving this Pitango Vegetable Korma. Delicious, convenient, satisfying. (Dairy Free, gluten free, preservative free - all natural) $7.50 for a pouch from the supermarket; feeds two. Makes for a pretty cheap meal. I'll be getting that again.
I am on day nine of my Detox Diet (i.e. the Daniel Fast). We are eating well. I have had to become inventive and more creative with my cooking. When you are limited to only plant-based foods, you have to think outside the box. And I am. I am proud of myself for sticking at it. And I plan to continue, but slowly add in some meat and dairy.

Loving my Window Seat sanctuary. And my new tea-towel cushion covers. And Peace.
Kiwiana kitsch. Love them. $5 teatowels from a discount store. Stitched two new ones yesterday.
Loving sitting here in the sunshine, the breeze ruffling my curtains. A Red Bush tea on the windowsill. The sound of silence.

And knowing that I sent my kids off to school today without raising my voice. I decided, right, if you want to drag your heels, I'm not going to get upset about it. You are the ones who will have to go to the office and get a late stamp. Shame. So from now on, no more yelling. If you want to be on time, that will require teamwork. And it's up to you. I am not going to shout or be anxious.

I've told them, from now on it's up to them. Get organised, do their part or be late. Yeah, we'll see how that one pans out. But right now I am loving my new peaceful policy.

Loving my Backyard (and finding these photos on my old camera, taken by Miss Fab)
What can I say. I love the trees. I love the green. The space. My new grass. Even overgrown and needing mowing. I love that when I go outside my kids follow me. I love that when I lounge on my daybed under the grapevine with a book or a cup of tea, my kids emerge blinking into the sunlight. They hop on their bikes. They climb the trees. They bounce on the tramp. If I'm outside, they're outside. So that's where I need to be.

{also loving that we have cancelled Sky TV. And bought a Freeview HD recorder instead, which I wangled a $160 discount on. Feeling proud of my shopping instincts}

Loving My Little People
Oh so much. Loving. Loving. Loving them.

Loving This boy, my troubled one.
Loving that he still wants to snuggle me. Loving that he still talks to me. Loving reading him Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the last few nights. And looking at his baby pictures, reminding him how much he is treasured. It's so easy for older kids to feel like they are no longer as precious now that they aren't so cute. I remember feeling that way. But looking back at those photos, and sharing the little stories connected to them... I asked him how he felt after looking at the pictures.

"They cheered me up a bit.." he conceded. So I reminded him, You are just as precious to mummy and daddy now as you were in those photos. I hope he starts to believe it.

Loving This Girl, my only girl.
She gets a bit put out when she sees me focusing on the one who's struggling. I try to explain why he needs me right now. But she's only six. She doesn't get it.

So I try to find ways to include her. Don't get grumpy when she comes out of bed and complains that her brother is getting to have snuggle time, Invite her in. When she pouts because the pictures are all of him, find ways to tell stories about her too. Invite her to listen to Charlie. We're up to Augustus Gloop.

When she huffs and puffs because it's not her book, keep on reading. When she sneaks up under the blankets and wriggles in close, be glad, keep reading. And when you finally get to tuck her into bed, an hour past her bedtime, give her an extra big smoochy kiss and squeeze her while you whisper "I love you so much."

Loving This Boy, my last baby.
Loving getting out of the house with him yesterday. Playing at the park. Taking him for "Coffee" across the street {Me = a soy chai latte; him = a kids hot chocolate which he dripped all down his t-shirt}

Loving listening to him play with a buddy and hearing their conversations.
Then daddy comes home for lunch and the friend runs to Mr G waving an old toy dinosaur... "This is old, this dinosaur old!" he says knowledgeably.
Mr G is impressed. "Yes yes the dinosaur is old!"
Scrag chimes in, "And my daddy old tooooo!" Tee hee.

Loving waking up with Buzz Lightyear in my bed. Ouch.
"Don't throw Buzz out, mummy!" Scrag says. "He come in peace!"

Do I need to go on? I love that boy. And so right now I'd better get off here and go take him to play with his friend around the corner. Where my friend, a wise mother of a nine-year-old may just have some insight to our situation.

504 Mainbutton2I hope so. Cos I am so loving my kids. And hoping they know it.
