Garden Fairy Party *Just Because*

I really thought my fairy party days were behind me. After all my daughter is ten, and most ten-year-old girls have left fairies and wing-wearing far behind. But driving along in the car last week, my tall gorgeous tween said to me, "Mum remember how we sometimes do those garden parties in the school holidays? It would be so cool to have a fairy party with my friends these holidays. Like when we were little, for a laugh. It would be so CUTE!"

And then came the brainwave. She said, "We could invite some little girls! Like J! Oh my gosh, that would be so cute! Me and my friends could be the big fairies..." And off she went imagining and envisioning a nostalgic fairy party, starring her.

I couldn't not do it; I've always wanted to do a fairy party in our garden, after all (her birthday is in Winter, so her little girl fairy birthday was indoors). So we sent out a text to some friends with daughters, big and little. "Come to our garden fairy party - wear your wings!" And hoped like heck for good weather.

WW: I Do Believe in Fairies

A Few Words...

This sweet Fairy Party was put on by my friend Sarah for her gorgeous four-year-old daughter. Scrag was one of the only boys in attendance, and decided to go as "Peter Pan". As you can see he admired himself a lot.

The party was planned for outdoors, with visions of tulle, ribbons and balloons hanging from tree branches... but the weather had other ideas, so Sarah transformed her living room into a magical fairy glade with mosquito nets and streamers.

The toadstool mats are still going strong from Miss Fab's Fairy party, and came in handy for musical cushions and pass the parcel.

I loved Sarah's clever idea of doubling up sellotape and sticking balloons to the underside of door frames and  ceiling, with ribbons dangling down - they looked like helium balloons that had floated up, but so much cheaper!

I was in girlie fairy heaven snapping these sweet creatures in their wings and tutus.

I have updated my original Fairy Party post and now have beautiful flower fairy printables available to download, along with two versions of a printable fairy party invitation and downloadable game ideas. There are also instructions for creating the toadstool mats, flower wreaths and the toadstool cake {which I helped Sarah re-create for this party - recognise that little fairy?}

Four is the perfect age for a fairy party. Sigh.

Fairy Party Menu

Fairy food is beautiful, colourful and decorated with berries and flowers. Try arranging it on tiered cake plates, for a garden party feel.

MERINGUES
Use the pre-made ones from the supermarket; make sure you get the "nests" which have a little hollow for putting cream in. Put a blob of whipped cream and top with a berry (defrost some frozen ones. the blackberries and raspberries look best).

FLOWER CUPCAKES
Use a chocolate cake mix and bake cupcakes in muffin papers. Ice with pink and white butter icing. The flowers are made with a jube lolly for the centre (but smarties look good too) and the petals are sliced marshmallows. Put white petals on the pink iced cakes, and pink petals on the white ones. Very simple, but look great!

JAM TARTS
Use the short pastry sheets, and roll out flatter so the pastry is not too thick once cooked. Use a glass to press out rounds of pastry. Line muffin pans with baking paper and press the pastry rounds into each one. For the filling mash up some frozen mixed berries (defrosted) with some strawberry jam. Spoon into each pastry shell. Cut out hearts and stars using the left over pastry and place on top of jam mixture. Cook at 1800C for 10-15 mins or until pastry is cooked. Leave to cool and then turn out.

FAIRY BERRY FIZZ
Ingredients: Blackcurrent syrup or clear apple juice; Soda Water; 2 handfuls of Mixed Frozen Berries. Put about 1cm of blackcurrent syrup in the bottom of a glass jug. Clear apple juice can be used instead if preferred, in which case fill the jug about 1/3 with apple juice. Fill nearly to the top with soda water. Put frozen berries on top. The colour from the berries will tint the juice pink. This is such a light, healthy fizzy drink - that's also yummy and refreshing!

FAIRY BREAD
Cut the crusts off 4-6 slices of white toast bread. Spread with low fat spread and then cut diagonally into 4 triangles. Dip into a bowl of 100s & 1000s. Arrange nicely on a plate. Easy peasey.

FLOWER PIZZAS
Use low fat puff pastry; cut each sheet into 9 squares (3 across, 3 down). Place squares on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Spread with fruit chutney or tomato sauce & sprinkle with grated cheese. Cut 2 cabanossi sticks into slices and use for the flower's centre; place in the middle of the pizza square. Use salami slices for the petals, cut each slice into thin triangles, like bicycle spokes. Arrange around the flowers' centre to create petals. Bake in the oven at 1800C for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is golden and pastry is cooked.

TOADSTOOL MUFFINS
Ice cupcakes with red butter icing and make white dots by slicing white marshmallows in half. The ones pictured here are from Littlies magazine, and they cut dots out of rolled white fondant icing. I think marshmallow dots are easier and taste better!

CHOCOLATE DIPPED STRAWBERRIES
In theme with this and very yummy, I also had chocolate dipped strawberries. I melted a kingsize block of dairy milk chocolate in a bowl over a pot of boiling water. Then half-dipped the strawberries into the chocolate and laid them out on a sheet of baking paper to set. You have to work quickly or the chocolate starts to go grainy and won't dip easily.

FRUIT KEBABSHere for step by step instructionsOTHER NIBBLES
I also had a bowl of lovely fresh cherries (with stalks on), Fruit kebabs (see separate post) and a bowl of pretzels (don't they look a lot like butterflies?)

3-4 firm Bananas cut into 5-6 segments
Desicated Coconut, Lemon Juice
Marshmallows, Seedless grapes
Fresh pineapple cut in chunks
Strawberries cut in half
Bamboo skewers cut in half

Dip the banana pieces in lemon juice and then roll in the desicated coconut.

Thread the fruit & marshmallows onto the skewers in this order: 1. Banana/coconut 2. Grape 3. Marshmallow 4. Pineapple chunk 5. Strawberry (Don't forget to snip off the sharp end of the skewer before you start)
The banana rolled in coconut is a real tropical treat; delicious (and the lemon juice stops the banana going brown as well as sticking the coconut on)
Yummy yummy yummy, and a great way to get kids to eat fruit at a party!

Fairy Party (with Printables)

Little girls love fairies, so when Miss Fab turned four, I just had to do a Fairy Party.

Here's how it went...

I wanted an Enchanted Forest feel but being a July birthday (middle of New Zealand winter), it's far too cold for an outdoor party and the weather much too unreliable. So I planned the party to be completely inside and made use of three rooms to give us lots of space:
  • DINING ROOM for a Fairy Tea party (under a green tulle and ivy canopy)
  • LOUNGE for games and Fairy Dancing
  • BEDROOM for a Fairy Beauty Parlour - because don't little girls just love to dress
    up?

The invitation instructed the fairies to come wearing their wings. I made colourful flower wreaths for each fairy (see instructions below).

Upon arrival there was a selection of makeup to use (glitter, nail polish, lip gloss, hair mascara etc), assisted by the mummies and "Fairy Lydia" - our wonderful regular babysitter who really looked the part and got into her role.

Once the fairies had all arrived and had fun in the beauty parlour, the little fairies moved through into the dining room for the Fairy Tea Party. The food was displayed on tiered cake stands, with Fairy Berry Fizz served in jewelled (disposable) wine glasses, all under a canopy of tulle and ivy.

The tea party included meringues with berries and cream, jam tarts, flower cupcakes, daisy pizzas, fruit kebabs and butterfly pretzels, washed down with berry punch..

"Fairy music" was playing in the background, giving it all quite an ethereal feeling (I made my own mix CD, mainly Enya and classical pieces).

The cake was a fairy on a toadstool (see below). After singing happy birthday and blowing the candles, the fairies moved into the lounge for fairy dancing and games.
Fairy Lydia led the girls in some circle dancing, then told them the Legend of the Fairy Ring (where you could end up dancing forever). They then played MUSICAL TOADSTOOLS, where the aim was not to land on a toadstool and thereby escape the fairy ring (with four year old girls, best to put a positive spin on getting 'out'!)

Fairy Treasure Hunt
I did a new take on a couple of old favourites, combining "Pass the Parcel" with a treasure hunt. Between each layer was a rhyming clue directing them to "treasure" hidden somewhere in the room. The hidden items included chocolate gold coins, Hershey's (pixie) kisses, lipgloss and fairy dust (glitter to be sprinkled in each girl's hair). Fairies collected treasure in their fairy kits - (party bag).

All in all a magical time was had by all.

Make Easy Toadstool Mats:
The Toadstool mats for the Fairy Ring are so easy (and cheap) to make.
To make eight circular mats you need four metres of red felt*.

Cut out large circles of red felt (for toadstools) and small circles of white felt (for spots). Attach spots to toadstool mats with PVA (craft) glue.
Great for non-sewers like me!

Fairy Toadstool Cake
This cake was pretty simple to make and decorate. I used two different sizes of ceramic bowls lined with baking paper: The larger bowl for the top of the toadstool, the smaller bowl for the bottom.

Use a double mixture of the Edmonds One Egg Chocolate Cake recipe (alternatively two packets of chocolate cake mix would do the trick).

TIP: When cooking a deep cake, cook on a lower heat and take longer without fanbake so that the cake doesn't "burst" at the top, making it uneven (I didn't do this for the bottom cake, and had to trim it. It was slightly lopsided).

When the two cakes were cooked and cooled, place the smaller cake on a cake plate and ice with white butter icing. Do this before putting the top of the toadstool on, it's much easier and less messy than the alternative.

When the icing is nearly set, position the larger cake on top and skewer the two pieces together with bamboo skewers. Push the bamboo all the way in, 5-6 skewers, until it feels secure, then ice it with red butter icing.
(To get a true red use gel food colouring, available at kitchen and cake shops).

White spots are marshmallows, sliced in half, stuck on while the red icing is still wet. Alternatively you could use white chocolate buttons.

To finish off the look, cover the cake plate with pale green icing and decorate with flowers made from sweets or mini marshmallows.

Pink flower birthday candles, completed the look.

Finally, top off the toadstool with a fairy. (I found a lovely bendy one at Living and Giving.)
To secure the fairy, wrap some thin wire around the fairy's waist under her skirt and poke it into the top of the cake.

How to Make Flower Garlands

YOU WILL NEED:
A Roll of thin craft wire
2-3 rolls of green electrical tape
5-6 bunches of brightly coloured artificial flowers
Sharp Scissors

{I found everything I needed at my local dollar store}

Snip off the flowers from the benches leaving a length of wire (and leaves) attached.
Cut a length of craft wire and wrap around your own head several times to get the size. (Start with an adults head so that by the time flowers/twists/bends are added it will fit a child.) Twist ends around tightly.
Wind the flowers randomly onto the wire "wreath" you have just created to create a colourful garland.
Secure the flowers and finish the garland off by covering/wrapping the green electrical tape around the wire.
