Link Up Your Christmas Posts...

There are so many lovely, inspiring and funky Christmas ideas out there in BlogLand.

I love Christmas. The smell of pine needles gives me the warm fuzzies. Twinkling Christmas lights make me happy. Christmas treats make me drool.

Red and Green, gold and silver - my favourite Christmas colours. And the candles!

I love nothing better than digging out the tree, hanging the ornaments collected over time, each one triggering memories. Precious, homemade, uniquely found and given ornaments; new memories added every year.

I love it all! I love the stories! The movies! The traditions and the memories.
I love the meaning. The many meanings of Christmas.
Layers of tradition, folklore and faith.
Family. Love. Joy. Peace on Earth and good will towards all mankind.
I'm a sucker for all of it.

So I'll keep this simple. I want to read your Christmas posts. Your stories, ideas, recipes, traditions. Even favourite posts from years gone by. Will you share them with me... and others?

Reality Check

Do you know that I lay in bed last night and worried about my November smiles list? I lay there listing off all the amazing things I got to do lately, and wondered, does it look like I've been bragging? Have I given the impression that my life is so perfect?

Cos it's not, you know. And I'd hate for you to think for one second that it is. I have been incredibly blessed this month with some wonderful trips, birthdays, events, people and places. So blessed.

The reality?
Life as we know it still goes on.
Kids squabbling.
Parents agonising over whether we are totally crap and our kids will turn out to be selfish delinquents.
Eight year olds refusing to shower.
Six year olds punishing us for daring to go away by turning into Human Air Raid Sirens.
Two year olds discovering they can push back. And shout. Really really loud.

Marital Discussions. Oh Yes. Even in Business Class.
Panic Attacks. Meltdowns. Tears. In public.
Having your lovely mother in law witness your total lack of energy and your complete inability to clean or tidy or get the kids off to school on those bad days.
Being completely embarrassed to have a witness to your uselessness.

All of this winds through and in and under and over all the great stuff.
Which only makes the great stuff so much sweeter.
It makes "One Hot Mummer" sound like an orchestra playing in your heart.
It gives girlish giggling the sound of tinkling silvery bells.
It turns chubby little hands clasping yours and slobbery kisses into magic things.
It causes the shared wink across the rows in Business Class to swell your heart like SpongeBob in water.
It transforms the folded washing and magically emptied dishwasher into gifts from heaven.

So please excuse me if I have given the impression lately that my life is all rosey.
Roses, yes. But thorns too. Can't have one without the other, can you?
That's the Reality.

xx

PS: The pictures are from Sunday night at Motat Nights Christmas Lights (gold coin donation). The Victorian village is all lit up, the blacksmith forge operating, actors getting the kids playing Victorian games, a sweet-maker making candy (you can even make your own), mulled wine for sale...

My idea? Arrive home from the airport, pile everyone in the car and do something fun and spontaneous as a family. Er, yeah. I didn't check the times, the kids were grumbling and complaining, tired and hungry. We had to wait for it to open, parked in the wrong place and had to walk for miles... I nearly gave up on the whole darn idea. But we persevered and in the end had a magic night together. That's life aye??

Smiles from November

Yes I know it's already December, but Alicia over at A Beautiful Mess does this lovely linky called "Project Smile" where you focus on all the things that made you smile in the past month. And this is my first chance to do mine, so I better get cracking before the linky closes! Because it's a lovely thing, focusing on the smiles.

So here in no particular order are my November Smiles...

  • Our 10th Wedding Anniversary. We made it this far. Marriage a rollercoaster of thrills, chills and spills, here we are still smiling.
  • Queenstown - a beautiful weekend in our Kiwi Wonderland
  • Going on my first ever school outing as Parent Help, with a bunch of the class clowns in my group.
  • Hearing my boy describe that event like this: "My mum came on my school trip. I was so excited like a birthday..." Love that he wants to be with me. Long may it last.
  • My birthday, 41 and counting. I am all content to be in my forties. Maybe because I am mostly in denial about what that means. Middle age??? Forgeddaboudit. Still smiling.
  • Getting a voucher made laboriously on the computer by my husband for a surprise weekend away at a secret location... somewhere I have never been before. Love his thoughtfulness. Love surprises.
  • Hubby doing Elvis in the Church Talent Quest. Not a hope of winning but oh what fun. And to hear my daughter prounounce indignantly, "How come my daddy didn't win???!!". Smile.

  • Getting called One Hot Mama by my eight-year-old son. His new name for me, written on my birthday card as "one hot mummer". What's a mummer? An actor in a folk play according to Wikipedia. Ha!
  • Grandma arriving from England. It's always like an early Christmas when she comes.
  • Playing Laser Strike with my son and his friends. Getting to shoot people with laser guns. And blow up space stations. Fun fun fun.
  • Dressing up as Princess Leia, finding the perfect wig for ten bucks (and being able to still zip my boots. Just.)
  • Pulling off another birthday party. Star Wars rocks. Love the fun themes as the kids get older. I am looking forward to one day having a Survivor Party. Or an Amazing Race party. Won't that be cool??
  • Going to my first ever U2 concert and screaming like a teenager. Bono, I love you. Edge, you rock.
  • Summer coming early. Eating outside, putting away winter woolies, slapping on sunscreen.
  • Grass. Grass in my garden from edge to edge. Weedy garden beds... gone. Nice green grass to mow instead... done! I love all the extra playing space.

That's just some of what made me smile in November. Now as we are full tilt into the Silly Season I am trying to keep things light and easy, and keep smiling. After all, there's so much to smile about when you stop and think about, yes?

What were some of your November Smiles??

Guess Where I Am??

I've been gone. Out of the country. Off on an adventure. Did you miss me?

Bet you'll never guess where I am?

I am sitting in the Air NZ Business Class lounge at Melbourne Airport.
That's right. I said Business Class.

My husband, may God forever bless him, whisked me off on a surprise trip to Melbourne, Australia. We travelled in style. We lodged in a historic Victorian Hotel. One of those ones with a doorman in a top hat. We took in a Show. We walked and ate and walked and ate.

Three nights of kid-free bliss. {God bless Grandma. We're getting her some Duty free}

So. Here I sit. Waiting for our flight, tapping away on the keyboard in Business Class. Tee Hee.

And guess what else? The day that I left my very first article appeared printed in a magazine.

So guess what I wrote on my immigration form? (You know, the question where they say, Occupation...?)
I put, "WRITER".

WRITER!

Cos I got published. In a real magazine.

Full of good vibes here, I am. In Business Class (Oh. Did I already mention that??? Sorry. I hate to go on. NO I DON'T! I am so blinkin ecstatic to be travelling Business Class I am like a little kid in a sweet shop!!!)

Anyhoo, any second now they will call our flight and we will go and get on the plane and head back home.
Home to our lovely kiddies.
Home to our Christmas Tree.
Home to our lovely gorgeous beautiful country.
And tomorrow, or maybe the next day I will show you my photos.
Of Business Class.
Tee Hee.

Christmas Stocking Advent Calendar

First day of December, first day of Christmas. I've been planning to make my own advent calendar since our Queenstown trip where I spotted a cute Christmas washing line one and wanted to buy it but hubby said, You can make that!
Gotta love his confidence (or was it his reluctance at spending $49.90 on an advent Calendar?)

Photobucket

So today I put Granny to work stitching stockings, and we love the result. Clever Granny. Clever us.
We have an advent calendar of mini christmas stockings strung over the fireplace, with a note inside for each day giving us something Christmassy to do, e.g.
  • Put up the Christmas Tree...
  • Read Dr Seuss "The Grinch"...
  • Watch The Grinch DVD...
  • Bake Christmas cookies...
  • Go visit the Christmas lights on Franklin Rd...
  • Dress up as the Three Wise Men and take photographs...
  • Catch the train into the city to visit Santa's Grotto at Smith & Caughey
  • A "Polar Express" Night with Hot Chocolate...

We are really getting into the Christmas spirit here.

Here's how to make an advent calendar one like ours...

Photobucket

YOU WILL NEED:
3-4 different colours of felt
contrasting embroidery thread
a stocking template (search "google images", copy & print)
braid, jewels or other decorations
a hot glue gun
mini wooden pegs (from a craft shop or $2 store)
foam numbers (glue gun on)
string for hanging (we used gold braid)

Cut out a paper template of a Christmas stocking and pin onto felt (right-click the stocking below to save to your computer and print out as template)

Use template to cut out 24 stockings (12 pairs of sides)

Photobucket

Use a contrasting running stitch to stitch them together. It helps to have a granny on hand. You may wish to embroider the numbers on each side. Don't bother. Just hot glue gun the foam numbers. Easier, faster and cuter.

Decorate the tops of each stocking, back and front.
Glue the numbers 1-12 on the fronts of the stockings, allow to set.
Flip the stockings over and glue the numbers 13-24 on the back.

Photobucket

Hang up your string somewhere cool like over the fireplace...
Peg your stockings onto the line. Poke little notes with Christmas activities into each stocking (for days 1-12).

When you get to day 13, flip all the stockings around and write out 12 new notes.

Photobucket

Enjoy all the cuteness.

(...and beware of the toddler who likes to rip off glue-gunned numbers. Be glad you wasted your time embroidered the numbers underneath after all)

PS: Since initially making this advent calendar there have been several stealth attacks by a certain toddler, ripping off my cute foam numbers leaving nasty glue streaks behind. I have now cut out contrasting felt numbers and used PVA glue to stick the new numbers on. That stuff cannot be pulled off. Hopefully these newer stronger felt numbers will survive any further Scrag toddler attacks!
