Movie Theme Night: The Lorax

Every Saturday we will be sharing with you our ideas for family movie nights. Movie reviews and fun theme night ideas.

Our Super-Cool-Fab Review Team...

Our crack team of expert Movie Reviewers are this week reviewing The Lorax.

The Lorax is the best animated movie that has come out in a while, in my humble opinion. It has catchy songs, great voice talent (including Danny Devito, Zac Efron and Taylor Swift) and a great fast-paced story. Based on Dr Seuss's book the story is set in a  world where all the trees have been chopped down, harvested greedily for personal gain while the environment has been destroyed. The film is not preachy but it certainly is thought provoking as well as fun and a great conversation starter with our kids about caring for our planet...

Movie Plot Summary: In a world where everything is artificial, you have to pay for air and trees are only in legends, a boy wants to impress the girl next door who dreams of trees. Only The Onceler knows where the trees went. Is there any hope that the trees could come back? Only if courage can win out over greed.

Here's what our experts have to say about The Lorax...

Dash. B. Cool: "This is a good movie about saving trees. It was cool and funny. The main message is saving trees and not selling air and stuff, so looking after the planet. The Lorax was funny, especially when he thought the lady was a man."

Dash scores this movie's "coolness" as:

Foxy Fab: "It was cool about saving the trees, but it would have been better if it was candy-floss trees. I think the trees look like candy floss (I love candy floss). The movie was funny, it had some cool songs. It was funny how he sold those things made out of tree cotton. His family wasn't very nice and I didn't like them because they were mean. That's what I didn't like about the movie, how they were mean and they made him chop down the trees cos they were too lazy to pick the cotton."

Foxy rates this movie's "fabness" as:

Super Scrag: "I only like it a little. Cos the singing is too loud. I liked the trees, they had my favourite colour on them - orange and blue. It was maybe a little funny. Bye bye!"

SuperScrag scores this movie's "super-ness" as:

..............

Scrag's review surprised his brother and sister who protested and said, "No give it a three at least!" Perhaps it was too early in the morning when we interviewed him, or perhaps he has forgotten how much he actually loved the movie at the time. After all it was a whole week ago that we watched it (and he's only four).

This movie is rated (PG), though I am racking my brains to think why it's not (G). Perhaps because our children need us parents to guide them towards better care of the earth we live on. Maybe so we can guide the conversation towards conservation???

Ideas to Make Your "Lorax" Movie Night even more Super-Cool-Fab...

The Lorax is rich in scope for more than just a family movie night. I am having visions of a school holiday impromptu party (or a birthday party?)... truffola cupcakes, candy floss, mustaches, chocolate bears, marshmallows... and hugging trees. There are all kinds of Earth-friendly eco-warrior activities to get the kids thinking about caring for our planet and appreciating what we have before it's gone. Just think of all the good earth activities you could do... planting trees, watering seeds or even a neighbourhood rubbish-patrol mission?!?!
